Bridgwater United Football Club have set ourselves the challenge to break our all time attendance record as our Festival of Football returns this weekend.
In February 1997, the attendance record was set, when 1112 people watched the Robin’s match against Taunton Town at Fairfax Park.
The Club, have seen crowds growing steadily this season thanks to good results and competitive football, both with the women’s team and then men’s.
For the upcoming weekend, United have two home games, the men take on Saltash United on Saturday, 3pm and the women face Crawley Wasps on Sunday, 2pm.
With two home games in the one weekend, the club is hosting another Festival of Football and urge locals to get down to Fairfax Park for what will be two days of fantastic entertainment and family activities including Fast and Furious Football which will lead the club’s variety of football themed activities
The Club’s new Robin Mascot will continue to be present throughout the weekend for selfies and high fives as well as a showcase of local businesses, charities and groups will feature on Sunday as part of Bridgwater United Community Sports Trust’s Community Corner.
The Men’s First Team’s frantic start to the new season shows no sign of abating as two more cup ties have been firmed up to add to the Western League fixtures which are coming thick and fast.
The eagerly anticipated FA Cup draw was released yesterday (23rd August) and it sends the Robins down to Basingstoke Town from the Isthmian League South Central on Saturday week (Sept 4). The Hampshire side have endured a torrid few seasons off the pitch with their former chairman evicting them from the Camrose Ground which had been home for 70 years and after a spell sharing Winchester City’s ground they now share the Hants FA ground at Winklebury, a few miles out of town.
They have made a good start to their campaign with an away win at Binfield followed by an FA Cup win over Totton and, like United have two games in three days next weekend.
Meanwhile the Robins’ Somerset Premier Cup tie against Yeovil Town will take place at Huish Park. The ties are due to be played in the first week in October but Yeovil are home to Maidenhead United that Tuesday and so the match is likely to take place on Tuesday Oct 12.
New United signing Wellington Jiminez will have a fellow Spaniard in the midst shortly as another former West Ham United academy player is arriving at the club, following the obligatory international clearance. Roger Ibars Blazquez is 19 and in Spain played for UE Figueres before coming over to the East London side’s academy.
Finally, Jack Taylor will miss the Basingstoke game as he has accumulated four FA Cup cautions which triggers an automatic one FA Cup match ban.
