ROBINS EARN HARD-FOUGHT POINT

After Tuesday’s difficult evening at Barnstaple, Bridgwater United faced yet another stern examination against top-six opposition in Buckland Athletic. The reverse fixture earlier in the season had finished 2-2, though only three players from that day remained in Saturday’s starting eleven.

Mike Duffy switched to right-back in place of Harry Smith, while Winter and Horton returned to the starting lineup alongside Williams.

FIRST HALF

The playing surface at Buckland proved to be one of the better pitches Bridgwater had encountered during their recent away travels, and it showed immediately in the quality of football on display. Both sides moved the ball well, creating an open, entertaining contest from the outset.

Bridgwater started brightly, finding plenty of space. On the five-minute mark, Harry Horton found himself in possession on the edge of the penalty area, but his effort sailed over the crossbar. Moments later, Wacko latched onto the ball inside the box, though his shot was comfortably gathered by the Buckland goalkeeper.

Bridgwater bossed the early exchanges, but Buckland demonstrated they posed a threat of their own. A shooting opportunity from just outside the area was directed straight at Louis Smith when more could’ve come of it.

Only a minute later, Bridgwater created the game’s biggest chance. Wacko intelligently dummied a pass, letting it run through his legs to release Haydan Chambers clean through the Buckland defence. One-on-one with the goalkeeper, Chambers struck his effort without enough conviction, allowing the keeper to save when either side would likely have opened the scoring.

Barely had the visitors recovered from that missed opportunity when Buckland fashioned an equally inviting chance at the other end. Bridgwater failed to clear their lines, the ball falling kindly to a Buckland player in the box. Again, placement either side of the goalkeeper would have brought a goal, but Smith got down well to save with his feet.

The frantic nature of the contest continued. On the half-hour mark, Buckland showed their attacking credentials once more, breaking with pace before delivering a cross that was met with a glancing header that drifted narrowly wide.

For the final fifteen minutes of the half, the hosts enjoyed more possession without creating anything of real substance. The last shot on target came from Winter, who cut inside but fired straight at the Buckland goalkeeper.

HALF TIME: BUCKLAND ATHLETIC 0-0 BRIDGWATER UNITED

The interval arrived after a frantic 45 minutes of ebbs and flows. Bridgwater had started the brighter, edging the opening exchanges and creating a big opportunity for Chambers. Yet Buckland had grown into proceedings and would have been equally disappointed not to have capitalised on some promising moments of their own.

Both sides had played some attractive football while also enduring periods under pressure and all was to play for in the next forty-five.

SECOND HALF

The restart brought immediate drama as Buckland broke through the Bridgwater defence almost directly from kickoff. Smith was required at his very best, spreading himself to block the initial effort before the rebound was charged down.

Ten minutes later, Chambers – who had worked tirelessly throughout – worked hard to win possession back on the right flank. His quick cross found Wacko, who brought the ball down with excellent control before seeing his shot charged down by a Buckland defender.

As time wore on, the match seemed to fizzle somewhat, with clear-cut chances becoming increasingly rare. Neither side retreated into their shell, both continued to break forward when opportunities presented themselves, but that quality final ball proved elusive.

Bridgwater had performed well, though they did need to ride their luck late on. In the 90th minute, a Buckland corner fell invitingly to an unmarked player at the back post who should have done better with the opportunity. Even deeper into injury time, the hosts struck a curling effort that whistled narrowly wide of Smith’s post.

The final whistle confirmed a goalless draw, though for a 0-0 it had been an entertaining and open contest. Both teams had served up attractive football, creating chances and playing with ambition. Each side would look back on opportunities that might have secured victory, but the consensus was that a point apiece represented a fair outcome.

In his post-match reflections, manager Dave Pearse expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance. He cited togetherness, fight, and hard work – qualities that had been evident across the last three fixtures, all away games against top-six opposition, in which Bridgwater had performed well on each occasion.

Morgan Williams was selected as Man of the Match.

A massive thank you to those supporters who made another lengthy away trip to back The Robins.

With no midweek fixture scheduled, Bridgwater are next in action on Saturday, 7th March, with another long journey, this time to Helston for a 3pm kickoff.
