Match Preview: Ilfracombe Town (H)

Bridgwater United play their third FA Cup tie of the season tomorrow when fellow Western League Premier Division Ilfracombe Town come calling to Fairfax Park following the tense and enthralling replayed game with Brixham on Tuesday writes Kerry Miller.

Bridgwater United v Ilfracombe Town
Saturday 21st August, 3pm
The Emirates FA Cup, Preliminary Round
Fairfax Park

After the chaos and media attention of the past ten days Dave Pearse and Karl Baggaley welcome back Jordan Greenwood to the squad after his one match ban and have new signings Wellington Jimenez, Sam Reed and Josh Wadham eligible for the tie. There are still a number of injuries within the camp and several played on Tuesday when they normally wouldn’t, such was the severity of the situation and so tomorrow’s side may well look somewhat different to that which edged past a young and skilful Brixham side who are bound to be right up there challenging for honours.

Ilfracombe will arrive on the back of two wins in Cup and league including a seven goal FA Cup thriller at Marlborough Park against Wellington and a win on the road at Cadbury Heath. Up front they have experienced striker Kevin Squire and are adapting to life back in the Western League after a gap of seven years when they dropped down to play locally in the North Devon and SW Peninsula Leagues.

The Robins’ home fans may well get their first chance to see 17 year old Wellington Diaz Ismael Jimenez in action, the young Spaniard having spent almost a year at the West Ham United Academy before being released. He plays wide on the left and his substitute appearance at Tavistock went some way to the hard earned victory which brought the first three pointer of the new campaign.

Should the game end in a draw, there is no extra-time and a replay would be at Ilfracombe on Tuesday night but if there is a result the Robins make the trip down to Bridport for a league game instead.
