Bridgwater United travel to Bristol on Saturday to take on a Brislington side which has seen its fair share of ups and downs in the past few weeks.

Their last six games have shown them to be an unpredictable squad which has, not unlike the Robins, suffered from injuries and unavailability but to their credit they have bounced back with a couple of impressive performances.

Having surprisingly gone out of the FA Vase at home to Ashton and Backwell United they travelled to Fairfax Park last month and conceded five goals in 18 minutes to go down 7-0 before suffering a humiliating 11-0 home defeat to title-chasing Exmouth Town a week later. Having had a blank week end they then confounded their critics by going to Shepton Mallet and winning 4-3 although 21 goals conceded in three games told a graphic tale.

A fine 2-2 draw with another top table club in Buckland Athletic appears to have steadied the ship in time for Bridgwater’s visit and although they went out of the Somerset Premier Cup to high-flying First Division favourites Welton Rovers on Tuesday night they will want to claw back some of the humiliation of those two big defeats.

Dave Pearse and Karl Baggaley have a more or less full squad to choose from with only Morgan Williams still rightly kept off the field by concussion protocol and they will want to push on having gone back into the top six following Tuesday night’s hard-earned victory over Wellington.

The management decision to play Nick Woodrow up front with Jack Taylor paid dividends inside 20 minutes and Tom Llewellyn’s second solo goal against Wellington sealed the deal in front of an impressive midweek crowd of almost 400.

They will be hoping for another clean bill of health in readiness for the FA Vase second round tie with Mousehole on Saturday week which could attract the biggest crowd of the season so far.
