Bridgwater United go into Saturday’s home Western League Premier Division match with Ashton and Backwell United with the squad buoyant after Saturday’s exciting FA Vase win over Mousehole and the prospect of another big day at Fairfax Park in the next round on the 11th December.

Jordan Greenwood’s first half headed winner, his fifth goal of the season, proved to be enough to give Dave Pearse and Karl Baggaley a double over the Cornish side which kept up the full house for the league with all the sides making it through, apart from Oldland Abbotonians who lost to Street.

Ashton and Backwell United are on a seven match losing run and currently sit above bottom placed Bridport with two wins and a draw from 16 league games. Jack Taylor sits out a one game ban served for five Western League cautions and Mike Duffy is expected to miss it through the injury picked up late against Mousehole but Nick Woodrow is hopeful his groin tweak clears up in time to lead the attack.

The side’s continued involvement in the FA Vase has meant that the home match with Bridport has now been moved to Sunday, Jan 2 with a 2pm ko and the game at home to Street is now on April 30, which is provisionally the last game of the season.

The league game at Saltash United is now on Saturday Jan 8 at 3pm which means that the fixture list for January, which was a little empty due to the front loading of matches in the late summer and autumn, is now slowly filling up.

Before Saturday’s game the U18s defend the Gary Else Memorial Cup, which they won so impressively against Mangotsfield United at the start of the season, when they entertain Bath City at the College 3g pitch, ko 10-30am. Mo Hopkins’ side have been among the goals with 21 in the last two away games and are good to watch and it should be a tremendous match.

Next Sunday Bridgwater United Women travel to Chichester and Selsey their Vitality Women’s FA Cup Second Round match which has a 1pm kick off. United will hope for a repeat of the opening day league fixture which saw the Robin’s run out with a 4-0 victory.

The FA Vase draw has been kind to the Robins as it gives them another home draw, this time against Wessex League Premier Division side Bashley, from the New Forest. Bash have a fine history and include an FA Vase semi-final among their credits but endured a nightmare couple of seasons which all but finished the club and have been slowly rebuilding and are enjoying the current season where they are fifth with 11 wins from 16 games.
