The cold bit sharply at Fairfax Park on Saturday afternoon, frost having claimed some fixtures across the region. Yet the playing surface stood resilient, ready to host a contest that would prove crucial to our flickering playoff ambitions.

Brislington arrived near the foot of the table, and victory was not just desirable but necessary if The Robins were to maintain any realistic hope of a top-five finish.

FIRST HALF

The opening exchanges were cautious rather than explosive, both sides preferring patience over penetration. What became immediately apparent was that Brislington had no intention of simply making up the numbers. Despite their low league position, they were well-drilled, disciplined, and compact from the first whistle, denying Bridgwater time and space.

It took nearly 20 minutes for either side to fashion a meaningful opportunity, and when it arrived, it fell to the visitors. They worked the ball intelligently before forcing Toby Lawrence into a block. The ball broke kindly for a Brislington striker who looked set to test Louis Smith, but Finn Hodge threw himself into a tackle to charge down the effort before it could reach the goal.

Ten minutes later, Bridgwater broke the deadlock. Billy Tucker drove into the penalty area with the type of feinting, jinking, and close control that has become his trademark. Tucker was brought down, and the referee’s arm shot forward immediately, pointing to the spot.

Owen Howe, December’s Player of the Month, stepped up with confidence and dispatched the penalty into the bottom corner.

Brislington responded well. Twice in the space of five minutes before the interval, they created openings, both efforts whistling narrowly wide of Smith’s goal. The visitors were proving stubborn opponents who were more than capable of scoring.

HALF TIME: BRIDGWATER 1-0 BRISLINGTON

As the teams disappeared down the tunnel, Bridgwater held a slender advantage courtesy of Tucker’s trickery and Howe’s composed finish. Yet it had been an even contest, with Brislington perhaps feeling slightly unfortunate to trail, having created the better of the chances.

SECOND HALF

Bridgwater emerged from the break with renewed urgency, immediately pressing for a second goal that might settle the contest.

Five minutes in, Jason Quick rose to meet a cross, his header appearing destined for the net until a Brislington defender produced a superb goal-line clearance. Moments later, Tucker weaved his magic once more to create a shooting opportunity, only to see his effort blocked.

Precisely on the hour mark, Brislington served notice that they remained dangerous. A well-worked move forced Smith into a smart save.

As time wore on, Bridgwater naturally dropped deeper, inviting pressure as they sought to protect their advantage. Brislington seized the initiative, enjoying greater possession and territory. With 25 minutes remaining, their persistence was rewarded. A free-kick was launched into the Bridgwater penalty area and met too easily, the header looping over Smith and dropping into the net to level the scores.

Just five minutes later, Howe came close to restoring the lead. A dangerous cross found him just yards from goal, but the ball bounced awkwardly between striker and defender before being cleared to safety.

As the clock ticked down, a draw seemed the inevitable outcome. Both teams had enjoyed periods of control, both had created chances, and neither could find that decisive moment of quality.

New signing Toby Lawrence had a different idea.

Jake Llewellyn launched a free-kick from the halfway line into the Brislington penalty area. Howe, as he has done so many times this season, rose above his marker to meet it, flicking the ball on with intelligent direction. It dropped to Lawrence, who needed no second invitation. He smashed the ball into the top corner beyond the goalkeeper’s despairing dive.

The lads chased a wheeling away Lawrence towards the corner flag in celebration, and Fairfax Park erupted as we snatched all three points.

FULL TIME: BRIDGWATER 2-1 BRISLINGTON

As the final whistle sounded moments later, the contrasting emotions were stark. Bridgwater’s players celebrated with the kind of elation that only a late winner can bring, while Brislington trudged from the field having received the cruellest of endings after a performance that probably deserved more.

The visitors had belied their league position, and on another day, they would have taken something from the contest. For Bridgwater, it was three points that kept playoff hopes teasing the back of our minds.

Shaun Potter, despite the victory, was honest in his post-match assessment, admitting the team had never quite got going as he would have liked. The process of implementing the management team’s desired style continues, game by game, with improvement as the goal over league position.

Toby Lawrence, for both his match-winning goal and solid defensive display, was deservedly named man of the match.
