On Tuesday, 9th September, under floodlights that pierced the rainy gloom, Bridgwater United arrived at The Playing Fields with renewed optimism following a weekend victory and bolstered by significant new additions to their ranks.
They faced a Shepton Mallet team who also have higher aspirations, with neither team’s form truly catching alight this season.
FIRST HALF
With Ryan Cainey and Jayden Nielsen, both recent acquisitions from Taunton, thrust straight into the starting lineup, there was an air of anticipation about how The Robins might perform. Nielsen, in particular, wasted little time in showcasing his qualities, getting on the ball early and forcing Crawford into a smart save.
The game’s opening exchanges swung back and forth, and at around the five-minute mark, Shepton displayed their attacking intent with a flowing move that released their left winger. His thunderous effort cannoned back off the crossbar, the goal frame vibrating.
The hosts continued to probe, and five minutes later, the same winger’s skilful running drew a penalty. Ben Snell stepped up confidently, but Louis Smith proved equal to the task, diving to his left to save and keep the scoreline level.
The Robins nearly capitalised on this immediately. Billy Tucker popped a clever ball through to Harry Horton, who slipped Sam Beresford through on goal. The striker found himself one-on-one with Crawford but couldn’t apply the finish the move deserved, shooting straight at the goalkeeper.
For the next twenty minutes, the game descended into something of a midfield battle. The slick surface made controlled possession difficult. As half-time approached, Shepton created the next clear opportunity. A slow-moving ball in the Bridgwater box was pounced upon by a Shepton attacker who found himself in acres of space. Smith, however, was quickly off his line, narrowing the angle and making a vital stop that kept the scores level.
Before the whistle blew, there was time for one more Bridgwater attack. Nielsen, who had been a bright spark with his direct running throughout the half, turned his marker before sliding a pass to Tucker in the box. The captain created a yard of space with a clever cut inside but couldn’t find the finish to match.
HALF TIME: SHEPTON MALLET 0-0 BRIDGWATER UNITED
As the players trudged towards the dressing rooms, the scoreline reflected what had been an evenly contested first half. Both goalkeepers had been called into meaningful action, with Smith’s penalty save the standout moment. Shepton might have felt slightly aggrieved not to be ahead given their chances, but Bridgwater had created opportunities of their own and remained very much in the contest.
SECOND HALF
Just five minutes after the restart, Shepton broke the deadlock. Ben Snell found space down the left flank and, while being shepherded towards the touchline by his marker, managed to cut inside and finish smartly into the bottom right corner to put them 1-up.
Louis Smith, who had already kept his team in the game with several important interventions, was called into action again moments later. A well-struck effort heading for the top corner required strong hands to bat the ball away to safety. Shepton, now playing downhill, looked increasingly dangerous with every attack.
With 20 minutes to go, and just as the rain intensified, falling in sheets, Shepton doubled their advantage. A corner was only partially cleared, falling invitingly to Snell on the edge of the area. His low drive somehow found its way through a forest of legs and in.
The game was slipping away from Bridgwater, and Snell wasn’t finished yet. Five minutes later, he completed his hat-trick after being released one-on-one. This time, there was no save forthcoming as Snell finished with confidence.
Bridgwater continued to push forward in search of a consolation. Harry Horton unleashed a fierce drive from 25 yards that had Crawford flicking out a reflex save, but by then the contest had been decided.
FULL TIME: SHEPTON MALLET 3-0 BRIDGWATER UNITED
The opening half had been closely contested, with both teams creating chances, but Shepton’s ruthlessness after the break, personified by Snell’s hat-trick, ultimately made the difference.
For Bridgwater, there were glimpses of promise, particularly in the performances of the new signings. However, as the team continues to integrate new faces, defensive cohesion remains a work in progress.
Bridgwater return to action on Saturday, September 13th, when Helston Athletic visit Fairfax Park for a 3pm kick-off.
