Bridgwater United 2 – Oldland Abbotonians 3

 Match Report:

A hugely disappointing start to 2025 as Bridgy succumbed to a useful Oldland Abbotonians side looking to get one over their old gaffer Craig Laird. The game started 15 minutes later the hardworking ground staff working on the pitch until the referee was satisfied. With Kyle Tooze still unavailable, Jake Llewellyn out injured and Noah Brown only fit enough for the bench there was a start for Riley Willis with two under 18’s, Eddie Townsend and Theo Worth given berths on the bench.

Finn Koppa was given a more forward role and found himself through on goal in the first five minutes but hurried his shot well wide. On 11 minutes Bridgy broke but with a three versus one situation Preston Hopwood played the wrong pass and the ball went out for a goal kick. Two minutes later with Oldland pressing Liam Kingston totally missed his punch from a visitors free kick. On 16 Mike Duffy put a long ball over the top, the Oldland defender missed his header and Jack Taylor gleefully accepted the chance to run on, round the keeper and cooly slot home. Seven minutes later Oldland had another free kick, Kingston saved well but the ball fell to Owen Lingard on the edge of the box and he shot home through a crowd of players. Ht 1-1

Within seven minutes of the restart ex-Bridgy striker Reece Ferguson was afforded far too much time and space on the edge of the box and he slid the ball past Kingston just inside his left hand post. Theo Worth replaced Finn Koppa for his debut. On 63 a Robins free kick was scrambled off the line and Taylor hit the post when he should have scored. However on 69 minutes Bridgy levelled as Haydan Chambers buried a low cross. They were level for only four minutes as a fabulous twenty yard shot into the roof of the net gave Kingston no chance. Oldland then cleared off the line again as Bridgy poured forward. Pfupa, Townsend and Brown replaced Williams, Sengor and Willis as time started to run out. On 92 a slip in the visitors defence allowed Taylor a clear sight of goal but he slammed his shot into the side netting. Ft 2-3
